Yarraville Remediation Project
Orica is planning for a remediation project at a site in Yarraville, Melbourne.
This webpage provides information on the project, access to key documents and a project schedule that will be updated as planning and the project progresses.
The remediation project will address on-site nitrogenated hydrocarbon and chlorinated hydrocarbon (CHC) contamination, associated with past manufacturing operations. It will include two distinct activities:
- Excavation of contaminated soil for transport and thermal treatment at a licensed off-site facility; and
- Remediation of soil and shallow groundwater, involving a technology called “in-situ thermal desorption” (ISTD), where electrical heaters are drilled into the ground to a depth of up to 7 m. The soil is heated to approximately 100°C and the volatile hydrocarbons are extracted and treated in a small on-site treatment plant.
The project is being conducted in accordance with Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) requirements under a Clean Up Notice, updated most recently in December 2016.
More information is included in the Fact Sheet below.
