Yarraville Remediation Project

Orica is conducting a remediation project at a site in Yarraville, Melbourne.

This webpage provides information on the project, access to key documents and a project schedule that will be updated as planning and the project progresses.

Project Overview

The remediation project will address nitrogenated hydrocarbon and chlorinated hydrocarbon (CHC) contamination, associated with past manufacturing operations. It will include two distinct activities:

  1. Excavation of contaminated soil for transport and thermal treatment at a licensed off-site facility; and
  2. Remediation of soil and shallow groundwater, involving a technology called “in-situ thermal desorption” (ISTD), where gas fired thermal heaters are drilled into the ground to a depth of up to 8m. The soil is heated to approximately 100°C and the volatile hydrocarbons are extracted and treated in a small on-site treatment plant.

The project is being conducted in accordance with Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) requirements under Clean Up Notices issued in December 2016 and June 2018.

More information is included in the Fact Sheet below.
