Manufacturing and donating hand sanitiser to support the community
Recognising an opportunity to give back to the local communities it operates in, Orica Deer Park has utilised the technical expertise of its emulsifiers team and the raw materials available to them, to produce over 1,000 litres of hand sanitiser for community groups; Meals on Wheels and Libraries Victoria.
As part of this initiative, 250 litres of sanitiser have already been donated to Meals on Wheels, and over the next three months 750 litres will be donated to Libraries Victoria.
Orica Deer Park’s donation has enabled Meals on Wheels volunteers to maintain good health and hygiene practices, while delivering home cooked meals and conducting welfare check-ins for elderly and socially isolated members across Victoria. It also means they can deliver hand sanitiser to every client they visit.
For Libraries Victoria, this donation will ensure teams at over 65 branch libraries across Central and North East Victoria have access to hand sanitiser to keep themselves, and those visiting the library, safe during these times.
Bringing science to students during COVID-19
With more and more students being educated remotely during these times, easily accessible and engaging forms of digital learning is now more important than ever.
Understanding this need, Orica partnered with the Australian Academy of Technology & Engineering to digitise its first STELR learning module, giving students across the world virtual access to hands-on technology and engineering education.
Given the importance of renewable energy now and into the future , we saw real value in sponsoring the wind turbines as the first remote learning module in the STELR portfolio of STEM education resources, and allow for more flexible learning in a time when students need it most.
These modules are available with Spanish and Bahasa closed captions to engage students in STEM beyond Australian shores. The digital learning module on wind turbines allows remote and home-schooled students to participate in experiments, by watching science guru Lee Constable test a number of wind turbine configurations. They can then analyse their results and complete their worksheets from home.

Community helping community in Gomia
In response to the growing number of confirmed cases in the District of Bokaro – where Orica’s Gomia site is located – our fire team partnered with local authorities to complete a sanitisation process to help stop the spread of the virus to other local residents.
To help local administrators facilitate this sanitisation, our team in Gomia used their knowledge and expertise in this field to provide an innovative hose nozzle solution that improved the efficiency of sanitisation, which greatly reduced product wastage.
