Air Monitoring

At Orica, we undertake both continuous and annual monitoring of air emissions from a number of sources on site.

Air pollutants we monitor include nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (total and <PM10). Continuous monitoring is used by plant operational personnel to ensure that the processes are run in a way that minimises the discharge of pollutants.

In 2011 Orica completed a project to reduce NOx emissions from the ammonia plant with the installation of a purge gas scrubber and the replacement of gas burners within a furnace with new, low NOx burners.

In 2023 Orica installed nitrogen dioxide abatement technology on our 3 Nitric Acid Plants to minimise the emissions of this gas.

In 2024 Orica installed particulate scrubbing technology to reduce particulate emissions from the No. 1 ammonium nitrate plant prill tower.

Greenhouse Gases

Greenhouse gas emissions from the Kooragang Island site include carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide, commonly called laughing gas.

Carbon dioxide emissions occur as a result of the use of natural gas in the ammonia plant and nitrates plant areas.

Orica is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through maximising the efficiency of processes to ensure that the tonnes of greenhouse gases generated per tonne of product are minimised.

In 2023 Orica installed tertiary nitrous oxide abatement technology on our 3 Nitric Acid Plants to minimise the emissions of this greenhouse gas.
