No1 Nitric Acid Plant New Stack
In 2022, we completed a project to replace the stack on the No.1 nitric acid plant. The original stack, which had been part of the Kooragang Island site’s skyline since 1969, had reached the end of its life.

Ammonia Management Improvement
A project to significantly improve the way ammonia is managed at the site was completed in 2020.

Soil and Groundwater Remediation
A project to remediate arsenic-contaminated soil and groundwater near the site’s north-western boundary was completed in 2019.

Air Quality Improvement
A project to reduce the site’s PM2.5 ammonium nitrate (AN) emissions is currently underway. The project involves retrofitting the prill tower with an irrigated fibre-bed scrubber, which is designed to capture fine particles of AN during the manufacturing process.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions Abatement
Works to decarbonise our operations are underway, with the installation of an Australian-first emissions abatement system EnviNOx® into the site’s three nitric acid plants.

Carbon Capture and Utilisation
Australian clean technology developer, Mineral Carbonation International (MCi) is constructing a world-first mobile demonstration plant at our site.
