KOORAGANG ISLAND
Safety
Orica Kooragang Island is committed to ensuring that all operations are conducted in accordance with our safety, health, environment and security policy.
We strive to ensure our facility operates to the highest standard to protect the health and safety of employees, the community and the environment. Our safety, health, environment and security (SHES) management system supports our delivery of a high standard of performance in these areas.
The Orica Kooragang Island site has been determined by SafeWork NSW to be a major hazard facility (MHF) because the facility has more than the threshold quantity of specific hazardous materials, termed Schedule 15 materials. MHFs are required to comply with the requirements in the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2025 (NSW) and hold a major hazard facility licence, which must be renewed every five years. Orica has held a MHF licence for the Kooragang Island site since 2015.
As an MHF we are required to manage the hazards and risks that could lead to a major incident to ensure that we operate with an acceptable level of risk to people and the environment. A safety case report is prepared and provided to SafeWork NSW to demonstrate how Orica manages its operations to meet this requirement. A summary of the safety case report has been prepared which provides a description of the Orica Kooragang Island facility and operations, the safety case, community information relating to emergency response and contact details.
