Our thoughts are with all those affected by the terrible tragedy in Beirut.
Orica has no facilities or business in the region, and can confirm that the product in the photograph that is circulating is not Orica product.
At this stage it appears that the explosion was the result of ammonium nitrate being abandoned in a warehouse for six years. It appears the product was intended for agricultural use since it is high density ammonium nitrate.
Orica is a world leader in the technical management and safe applications of commercial explosives and blasting systems. Our number one priority is the safety of our people and the communities we operate and we take a rigorous, best-practice approach towards safety in the production, storage and transport of all our products, including ammonium nitrate.
In relation to ammonium nitrate, Orica adheres to all international standards and local regulations that ensure safety at every stage of the manufacturing supply chain.
Our systematic identification, assessment and management of Safety, Health, Environmental and Security (SHES) risks associated with our company’s activities, products and services, is core to our business operations.
