Greenhouse gas emissions abatement

Works to decarbonise our operations are underway, with the installation of an Australian-first emissions abatement system EnviNOx® into the site’s three nitric acid plants.

The $37 million project will reduce the site’s nitrous oxide emissions by 95 per cent. Nitrous oxide, generated as a by-product of nitric acid production, is the primary source of greenhouse gas emissions at the Kooragang Island facility.

On completion of the project, the overall reduction in greenhouse emissions for the Kooragang Island site will be close to 50 per cent.

To facilitate the works, the New South Wales Government’s Net Zero Industry and Innovation Program has co-invested $13.06 million, together with Orica’s $24 million financed by a five-year debt facility provided by the Federal Government’s Clean Energy Finance Corporation. The Clean Energy Regulator has also approved the project as eligible to generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs).
